What is a Snowy Owl? Can You Keep a Snowy Owl as a Pet?

Snowy Owl

The snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus), also known as the polar owl, the white owl and the Arctic owl, is a large, white, owl of the true owl family. Snowy owls are native to the Arctic regions of both North America and the Palearctic, breeding mostly on the tundra. It has a number of unique adaptations to its habitat and lifestyle, which are quite distinct from other extant owls.

Inhabits tundra and tundra areas, also seen in moorland hills. Feeds on rodents, birds and insects. Breeds in the Arctic and Siberia, and is rare in parts of northern China when wintering. Snowy owls live in the Arctic. While owls usually come out at night to hunt, snowy owls can come out both day and night. Owls usually live in trees, which are not available in the Arctic, so snowy owls can only nest on rocks. Snowy owls lay 12 eggs per year, and while the females incubate their eggs in the nest, the males take on the task of foraging and protecting their homes. The primary prey is lemmings, with occasional larger prey such as hares, gulls and ducks.

Snowy owls are found throughout the circumpolar Arctic tundra and on islands within the Arctic Circle that are not completely covered by ice, including Alaska, Canada, Greenland, northern Scandinavia, Russia, northern New Lands, and northern Siberia.

The Snowy Owl is the provincial bird of Quebec, Canada, and is also depicted on the $50 Canadian dollar bill issued in 1986; it was also the main motif on the coat of arms of former Canadian Governor General Jules Leger. The snowy owl is probably the oldest bird that can be identified in European prehistoric cave paintings.

Can One Have Snowy Owl As A Pet?

It’s illegal to have a Snowy Owl as a pet in the US private ownership. This rule is been placed in 1918 by the US Fish and Wildlife Service according to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

Unlike in the U.S., owls can be kept as legal pets in Japan. The bird holds a special meaning in the country. They are symbols of luck.
