What is Madagascar Day Gecko? Knowledge about Day Gecko

The Madagascar day gecko (Phelsuma madagascariensis madagascariensis) is a diurnal species of gecko. It lives on the eastern coast of Madagascar and typically inhabits rainforests and dwells on trees. The Madagascar day gecko feeds on insects, fruit and nectar.

With their amazingly bright colors and active nature, day geckos are extremely charismatic lizards. But while they make excellent display pets, they may not be the pet for everyone. This holds especially true for those who want a lizard that they can take out of their enclosure and handle.

Are Madagascar day geckos good pets?

Day geckos, in general, are not good geckos for beginner reptile keepers as they are a high-maintenance pet. Some of the easier day geckos to care for include giant day geckos, gold dust day geckos, or lined day geckos.

Popular pet day geckos include the giant day gecko that can live for up to 15 years but more commonly lives six to eight years in captivity.

What do Madagascar lizards eat?

Madagascar giant day geckos blend in among the leaves as they lie in wait for small prey such as insects, crabs, scorpions, and spiders. They will also eat fruit and lick honey. Condensation on leaves provides drinking water.

How big do Madagascar day geckos get?

Adults can grow up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) long. Giant day geckos are native to eastern Madagascar, but populations have been introduced to oceanic islands surrounding Madagascar, as well as to Hawaii and the Florida Keys. These lizards were likely first brought in as pets.

How do you take care of a Madagascar day gecko?

Day Geckos should have a temperature gradient between 75-80°F with a basking area near 90°F. Since Day Geckos are diurnal it's imperative to provide them with the correct amount of UVA/UVB florescent lighting to ensure their well-being.

Do Madagascar day geckos like to be held?

Generally, day geckos don't like being handled, but experienced and careful gecko-keepers can successfully handle them. If day geckos feel threatened, they can slough off their soft skin as a defense mechanism.
