What is an Axolotl? Are axolotls good for pets? Facts of Axolotl

Axolotl

The axolotl is a paedomorphic salamander closely related to the tiger salamander. Axolotls are unusual among amphibians in that they reach adulthood without undergoing metamorphosis. Instead of taking to the land, adults remain aquatic and gilled. The species was originally found in several lakes underlying what is now Mexico City, such as Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco.

Axolotl bodies are about 25 to 30 cm long and dark brown with black spots. Albinos, white mutants, and mutants of other colors are common. The limbs and feet are very small, but the tail is quite long. The dorsal fin extends from the back of the head to the end of the tail. The ventral fin extends from the middle of the two hindlimbs to the end of the tail. They have the ability to regenerate most of the limbs on their bodies, and their variable body coloration is part of their appeal, with over 30 species said to exist worldwide.

Axolotl have an astonishing ability to regenerate body organs and lost limbs. Incredibly, an Axolotl can grow back lost limbs in only a few weeks. It can even regenerate its lungs, heart, spinal cord and parts of its brain, if it suffers a head injury and heals without any scarring. . Another attractive feature: their eggs are large and strong. Axolotl are very easy to reproduce in large numbers compared to other species of fire lizards.

On the IUCN conservation index, axolotls are categorised as critically endangered, meaning that their numbers are in sharp decline with a very real threat of them going extinct in the near future. However, this only applies to wild species, and there are now more axolotls in captivity than there are in the natural world.

Axolotl can as a pet. Axolotls make fascinating pets but are an intensive commitment. Caring for a pet axolotl is complex and requires a great deal of maintenance. Axolotls require an aquatic environment with very specific temperature, water quality and husbandry requirements.

Axolotl are a friendly, interactive aquatic pet that will give you years of enjoyment if kept properly. Fortunately, they are relatively easy to care for once they are properly housed and fed.
