Is it legal to own a wombat as a pet? Do wombats make good pets?

Wombats are short-legged, muscular quadrupedal marsupials that are native to Australia. They are about 1 m (40 in) in length with small, stubby tails and weigh between 20 and 35 kg (44 and 77 lb). They are adaptable and habitat tolerant, and are found in forested, mountainous, and heathland areas of southern and eastern Australia.

Wombats are herbivores. Similar to most herbivores, wombat recipes include shrubs, trees, fungi, bark, mosses, leaves, and bog plants, with a particular preference for perennial forage grasses. In dry seasons, they will also eat old grass roots.

Wombats like to be independent and solitary, sometimes 2-3 live together. They are nocturnal animals, hiding in their burrows during the day and sleeping. They feed on grasses and wild plants. Wombats have a very slow metabolism, small eyes and ears, and a short, stout body that takes almost 14 days to complete digestion, which helps them live in a dry environment. They generally move very slowly, but when in danger, they can escape at speeds of up to 40 km/h and maintain them for up to 90 seconds. Wombats protect the boundaries centered around their dens and are aggressive towards intruders.

The Tasmanian wombat and the South Australian hairy-nosed wombat have a wide range, do not approach the Vulnerable Endangered Threshold criterion for species survival, and have stable population trends, and are therefore evaluated as species without existential crisis.

Is it legal to own a wombat as a pet? Do wombats make good pets?
Only registered wildlife carers in Austraila are allowed to keep them. It is also illegal to import this animal to any foreign country.
Though wombats may start out friendly, they're wild animals, and quickly become standoffish and even aggressive towards humans. No matter how much you might want to cuddle a wombat, it does not want to cuddle you back. This is especially true of wild wombats.
